Dear Members and Friends

I am pleased to invite you to the 2022 West Country Branch, Britain-Australia Society, Admiral Arthur Phillip Birthday service at St Nicholas Church followed by a reception and lunch at the Bailbrook Hotel, Bathampton on Monday October 10, 2022.

This year marks the 235th year since the departure of the first fleet, and the founding of modern Australia by Admiral Phillip, who became the first Governor of what was then the colony of New South Wales, and later, the country of Australia. Phillip returned to England to live at Bath, where he died in 1814, and was buried at St Nicholas, Bathampton.

The branch is again proud to host a memorial church service and lunch to commemorate this great achievement and the life of this remarkable man.

Phillip enjoyed his retirement in the beautiful city of Bath enjoying evenings at the Assembly Rooms, Bennet St, and Bath's other beautiful locations. His home at Bennet St is directly across the road from the Armillary Sphere memorial the BAS unveiled at his 200th Anniversery event in 2015.

Guest Speaker, Sir Roger Carrick KCMG LVO

Unfortunately Professor Carl Bridge now needs to be in Australia in October and is therefore not available this year to give the address on Admiral Phillip as previously advertised. However we are delighted that Admiral Phillip “expert", Sir Roger Carrick, has agreed to give the address using some new material on Phillip that he has recently discovered. Sir Roger is a National BAS Vice Presented, ex High Commissioner to Australia and an author of a number of published articles on Admiral Phillip. His bio is attached.

Confirmed guests to this year's service and lunch include The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Bath, Councillor Rob Appleyard; Captain Paul Mandziy, Australian Naval Adviser to the United Kingdom representing the High Australian Commissioner; The National Society Chairman, Damien Walsh; and the National BAS Chaplain, Revd George Bush.

The day will start with tea and coffee at the St Nicholas church hall, Bathampton at 10.30 am followed by the 11.00 am commemorative church service. Guests will then travel the short distance to the Bailbrook House Hotel for a reception with the Mayor of Bath starting at 12.15pm followed by Lunch and Sir Roger’s Presentation. The day will finish around 3.00pm.
